Memorial to Apache

In 1989, I was 27 years old and a lifelong dog lover. I hated cats. But I had a problem. I was in my second year of law school and I was living in a mouse-infested apartment in Hell’s Kitchen. The mice were keeping me up all night scratching on the walls and floors, eating my food and avoiding traps. I needed a cat. That’s when you came into my life. You were only a few weeks old, born in a friend’s garage and already named. A bundle of bright red fur and energy, you rode in my car without a carrier because, well, what did I know about cats. That first day, you and I napped on my couch and became friends for life. I raised you like a dog because that’s what I knew. You could fetch and come when I whistled. You grew into one of the biggest cats I’ve ever seen. You helped me with the mice but more importantly your constant companionship helped get me through many lonely hours studying for school and the bar exam. When I was most stressed out, you would stretch out on whatever I was studying and insist that I stop studying to pet you. You were with me for sixteen years through thick and thin, including moves from New York City to Queens, back to New York City, to Pennsylvania, back to New York City again (two different apartments) and then to New Jersey. You were with me when I got married and you became a friend to my wife, who nicknamed you Squeaky, and my children. The decision on August 15, 2005 to end your suffering was very painful to me but in the end it was best for you. You were a great friend to me, I miss your spirit and playfulness and, most of all, I miss you.
Mike
